Overview

Due to the prolonged impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, athletes and trainers are unable to access the same facilities as before. Additionally, with limited opportunities for the general public to go out easily, there is a growing demand for addressing the issue of insufficient physical activity.

To address this, we have created the 'Kitaete' service. For athletes and trainers, it provides an online platform to freely share their activities and insights. For users, it aims to seamlessly introduce exercise into their daily lives through online means, considering the current challenges of limited outdoor activities.

Research and Understanding

We conducted extensive surveys to gain insights into user preferences and pain points. These surveys helped us identify the features that users valued most, such as thoughts, exploration, and goals related to online training.

User Core Insights

• Users have their own workout goals and tastes, so they want a customized workout experience.

• Many users struggle to continue home training for a long time, so they want a sustainable solution.

• Users have different exercise levels and interests, so the app should provide tailored exercise options.

Trainer Core Insights

• Users need motivation and guidance to start and continue working out, and trainers must provide support.

• Some users want their posture corrected and specialized exercises, so trainers need to develop content to meet these needs.

• The trainer should monitor the customer's exercise performance and provide feedback to find opportunities to improve.

Business Core Insights

• Varied exercise content needs to be provided in consideration of individual exercise goals and tastes to provide users with a multitude of options.

• It is necessary to increase the value of the service by introducing effective features and campaigns to enhance user motivation.

• Collect and analyze feedback from users to continuously improve the system’s services.

During the research phase, I extensively analyzed the apps and web services of competing companies. I conducted surveys to identify challenges faced by users during training sessions or when exercising alone. Additionally, I conducted interviews with several trainers to gain deeper insights. Through this research and interviews, I confirmed user pain points and requirements, providing valuable insights for improving the UX.

Compatible Service and App System

Key Feature One

Providing customized and reusable exercise content:

We offer a diverse range of exercise content tailored to users' individual fitness goals and preferences, catering to everyone from beginners to advanced users. Our platform features a variety of exercise content crafted by professional trainers.

Tailored video clips for user convenience:

Short video clips uploaded by trainers allow users to select and utilize specific segments that cater to their needs. This customization ensures that users can focus on the exercise components that matter most to them.

Win-win service model:

Our service model not only delivers personalized training experiences for users but also creates a win-win scenario. It allows trainers and athletes to monetize their expertise by providing a platform where they can turn their professional knowledge into revenue. This dual-benefit model fosters a mutually rewarding environment for both users and fitness professionals.

Key Feature Two

Convenient education service for instructors and users

This service provides instructors with a convenient feature to easily set up course subscriptions. Through this, instructors can manage their education plans and subscriptions effortlessly. Simultaneously, users benefit from low-cost lessons and personalized pointers for each individual. Additionally, by utilizing messaging features, instructors can monitor learners' exercise performance in real time and provide valuable feedback for improvement. This enhances the overall learning experience, making it more effective and personalized.

MVP Launch and Usability test

To test our findings from our research, we launched a Minimum Viable Product (MVP). During this phase, we focused on three key features: video uploading, setting up training subscriptions, and video feedback through private chat. We utilized user feedback to enhance the service, conducting user tests based on scenarios involving both users and trainers, leading to the identification of several issues.

We recruited approximately 15 test users and divided them into the roles of trainers and users to conduct the testing.

Problem & Solution

Problem: Unorganized Video List View

According to the data, users are less drawn to content when there is a wide range of choices.

Solution: Enhancing user experience through personalized content and efficient filtering

To improve on this, we allow users to define their interests and personal goals (My Goals). Upon entering the app, users are greeted with questionnaires about their interests, enabling us to tailor lessons and filter out irrelevant content.

Our user research indicates that four key questions effectively capture users' basic needs.

Furthermore, we introduced a video list filter, enabling users to quickly access the content they desire.

Problem: The video description varies between trainers, making it hard to compare content

Solution: Standardized the format for video descriptions which increased user comprehension

Rather than allowing complete free-form entry for regular text sections, we have standardized the writing format to some extent. This ensures a degree of uniformity, making it easier for users to compare and comprehend information at a glance.

After the release

During the pre-registration phase, 16 users registered as trainers. As of 2021, Daily Active Users (DAU), Monthly Active Users (MAU), and recurring users have been steadily increasing for both trainers and trainees.

Visual Design

From the beta version, we observed that most of the content revolves around yoga and stretching exercises. Consequently, the app's visual identity incorporates a refreshing mint green color to evoke a feeling of health and physical balance.

The inspiration for the logo design comes from the megaphones commonly used in sports training. Infused with a clean and minimalist style, the logo embodies a positive and cheerful message.

Teaser & BN Design

I collaborated with the client's marketing team to create the trainer recruitment page and user teaser page before the service launch. To achieve a light and friendly atmosphere, I incorporated illustrations and designed the pages to be easily understandable. After the launch, I took charge of creating promotional banners and images for social media promotion.

Final Design

What I learned

Collaborative UX Design

Collaboration with a UX designer throughout the research, user surveys, and usability testing phases emphasized the significance of teamwork in creating a successful user experience. Learning to leverage each other's strengths and insights contributed to a more well-rounded and effective design process.

Iterative Design through Usability Testing

Conducting usability tests after the MVP development underscored the importance of an iterative design process. Analyzing user feedback and making necessary adjustments helped me appreciate the value of agile methodology, ensuring the final product aligns closely with user expectations and preferences.
